26 and 28 GHz Benchmark: key takeaways
Our 26 and 28 GHz Benchmark has been updated to include developments over the past 18 months. The most important findings are given below.
- A growing number of nations have awarded 26 GHz and/or 28 GHz or are planning to do so. Since January 2022 the figure has increased from 46 to 66.
- 26 GHz is the most widely used band: 27 countries have assigned spectrum in this range compared to nine in the 28 GHz band.
- Nations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa are assigning 26 GHz spectrum while countries in the the Americas and Asia are awarding 28 GHz or both bands.
- Close to half of the awards are in European countries, with assignments in Asian countries representing a third of the total.
- About half of the assignments studied are local or regional licences and half are national licences.
- Only about half of planned or completed national assignments deliver or are likely to deliver the industry-recommended bandwidth of 800 MHz per operator.
- For both bands, there is a large variance across countries both in the amount of spectrum assigned and planned and in the amounts assigned per operator.
