UN SDGs
The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out a blueprint for peace and prosperity for the Earth and its people. They seek to end poverty, improve health and education, reduce inequality, spur economic development and tackle environmental issues. You can find the goals, their history, and the status of their implementation here.
SDG 13 concerns combating climate change and its impacts. In recent years, spectrum regulators and users have begun assessing what role spectrum management might play in cutting carbon emissions. The ITU and BEREC, for example, have committed to finding ways to counter climate change.
In 2020, the information and communication technology sector, already aware that it was a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, published a science-based pathway to reduce those emissions across the sector. The mobile industry, which wants to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, believes that spectrum policy has an important role to play in reaching that goal by helping to reduce the sector’s carbon emissions and by enabling greater mobile connectivity.
