Private networks, logically or physically separated from public mobile networks, have long provided valuable services to their predominantly business customers. But the last few years has seen a resurgence in these initiatives as industry seeks to digitise itself, and as the telecoms industry seeks new customers.

Spectrum regulators globally, it seems, are keen for this trend to succeed. Dozens of them have established new initiatives or licensing products so that spectrum is available for such innovative services.

Regulators may have similar aims, but there is a lot of variation in how they assign spectrum for private networks.

To keep track of these developments, we have made a new benchmarking section of the Spectrum Research Service. The benchmark summarises global developments through tables and maps, and contains four research notes that explain general trends. These are:
