Research update: the proliferation of mobile bands in 1700-2200 MHz

This week our Research Service focuses on a frequency range where mobile usage is particularly fragmented: 1700-2200 MHz.

We explain how these mobile bands are used globally, how this usage is changing and consider the implications of this fragmented approach.

The individual band entries shown below have been updated with the latest statistics and summaries of recent policy developments.

Research notes

Mobile bands in 1700-2200 MHz In this frequency range a variety of band plans have emerged around the world. This note examines the differences and explains how they are used.

1900 MHz:  Also known as the PCS band this is used across the Americas for 2G and 3G and is being gradually being refarmed for LTE.

AWS bands: These are widely used for 3G and 4G in the Americas and based on similar frequencies to 2 GHz and 1800 MHz.

1800 MHz The backbone of LTE networks in Europe and Asia which is still widely used for GSM.

2 GHz Often known as the “3G band” this was auctioned from 2000 onwards and is being refarmed to LTE in a small number of countries.
